The 9 Essential Things In Your Gantt Chart

The 9 Essential Things In Your Gantt ChartThe 9 Essential Things In Your Gantt ChartWhile a simple to-do list may be sufficient for completing small projects around the house when it comes to project management, a more detailed plan of action is usually needed. One of the most popular and practical ways to manage the timing of all of the tasks of a project is to use a Gantt chart. A Gantt Chart A Gantt chart is a chart that shows all of the different sub-tasks of a project and how they relate to each other in terms of time. Its a way of displaying your project schedule, and it helps get the work done on time. It shows all of the tasks that need to be done, the amount of time each task is expected to take, the time frames in which individual tasks are to be completed, and the relationship between various tasks. This way, everything gets done on schedule, and you never waste time waiting for a task to be completed that should have been done already. Here are nine key components of Gantt charts. Dates Are Displayed Along the Top One of the main components of a Gantt chart, the dates allow project managers to see not only when the entire project will begin and end, but also when each task will take place. Tasks Are Listed Down the Left Side Large projects always consist of a large number of sub-tasks. A Gantt chart helps project managers keep track of all of the sub-tasks in a project, so nothing is forgotten or delayed. Bars Are Used to Represent the Time Frame Each Task Is Expected to Take Once the sub-tasks have been listed, bars are used to show exactly when each sub-task should take place. This helps ensure that every sub-task is done on schedule so that the entire project will be completed on time. When Gantt charts were initially developed, they were written by hand, making changing or updating the chart laborious. Thankfully, with todays current project management software, project managers can easily add, subtract and modify tasks without n eeding to adjust the entire chart by hand. Milestones Are Displayed as Diamonds Milestones are those tasks that are instrumental to a projects completion and success. Unlike the minor details, which also have to be done, completing a milestone offers a sense of satisfaction and forward motion. On a Gantt chart, milestones are displayed as diamonds (or, sometimes, a different shape) at the end of a particular taskbar. Dependencies Are Indicated by Small Arrows While some of your tasks can be done at any time, others must be completed before or after another sub-task can begin or end. ansicht dependencies are indicated by small arrows between the taskbars on a Gantt chart. Progress Is Shown by Shading on Task Bars While many sub-tasks can be completed fairly quickly, there will be plenty of times when you will want to see at a glance exactly how your project is coming along. This can be accomplished by shading the task bars to represent the portion of each task that has al ready been completed. A Vertical Line Marker Shows Current Date Another way to see your projects process at a glance, a vertical line marker indicates the current date on the chart. It helps you manage your time effectively as you can see at a glance how much you have left to do and see if you are on track to complete the project on time. The Task ID Identifies In todays fast-paced business world, you likely have several tasks going on at the same time. Including the task ID on the Gantt chart helps everyone involved to quickly identify the task you are talking about. Resources Are Assigned and Identified While not every Gantt chart lists the names of the people who will be working on it, if your project will be completed by a number of individuals, listing names and the tasks that are assigned to them can be incredibly helpful. When managing a project, you need to make sure all of the individual tasks are completed in a timely and efficient manner. A Gantt chart will he lp you do just that.

6 Steps to Create a Professional Development Plan

6 Steps to Create a Professional Development Plan 6 Steps to Create a Professional Development Plan To visit another countryTo be engaged to be marriedTo be a best-selling novelistTo have at least three published booksBlah, blah, blah, and the list went on. With the exception of finally visiting somewhere other than the 50 states, my this-is-where-I-want-to-be list is looking like Ill need a years extension to complete it.Needless to say, Im not quite sure how I feel about these X amount of years plans to map the course of your life (if thats even possible), yet when I learned about a different kind of planning- one directed toward your profession- I was intrigued. Ladies and gentleman, allow me to introduce to all of you a technique many of you should already have, and if you dont, one I would recommend you adopt- the professional development plan.A professional development plan is a specific (individualized or generalized) approach to enhance professional growth in a career or ge schftliches miteinander. In laymans terms, its simply a plan setup to help you (or a company) take the necessary steps to develop your professional life. And below are six easy steps to creating a plan specifically for youEvaluateWhat is your current professional standing? Employed, unemployed, working for a company, business owner? Now think about where you want to be professionally. What steps will it take to get there? The first step to creating an efficient professional development plan is to assess your current profession, whether or not youre happy or where you desire to be. If you desire to elevate your career, you must take the time to really think about all the necessary steps youll have to take to do that.PlanOnce youve assessed your current standing, its time to plan. Setting goals is a great way to ensure you reach your final professional destination. Start with the biggest, most-outlandish career aspiration (your main goal) and then work backward plotting every smaller goal you will need to accomplish to work up to the main one.For example, say you desire to open your own business. The grand opening day could be your main goal. Working backward you will have to have the means to promote the opening. Before that you will have to know and supply the products your store will offer (what youre promoting). This means you will need to get suppliers, and suppliers cost money. Having money to fund the suppliers may mean securing a loan, and securing a loan requires paperwork. Do the same process for the building layout and staff additions. Though this task may be meticulous, it is extremely necessary for a successful plan. Also, remember to set realistic deadlines for each goal. It is very difficult to successfully start a business in one month rather than one year.ResearchNow that youve set goals, research, research, research. Look up professional development courses, events, certifications and trainings that will help you achieve your goals. Make a list of where theyre offered, how much they cost and how long each will take. Then, go back to your goals and work each activity into a schedule, taking into account your deadlines and the fact that you have other commitments, e.g. work, family, etc.ExecuteThis step is simple. Follow along with the plan being as punctual as possible. You dont want to throw off your entire plan because you didnt keep up with your planned professional development activities.MonitorTrack and monitor your progress as you go. This will not only help you stay on schedule, but will keep you updated on how close or far you are from reaching your target goal(s). You can reevaluate your plan at the end of every six months or one year, depending on your goals, to binnensee if youll need more or less time and/or if you need or dont need to accomplish certain goals and professional development activities. As you go along with your plan, things may surface you were previously unaware of that could affect the steps you do/do not need to take to reach your target.RememberThis final step is very important. Remember that nothing goes according to plan. As you follow along with your professional development plan be prepared for curve balls and delays, but do not throw in the towel. Just because you made a plan does not mean its set in stone. Life happens and your plan(s) can and will change as circumstances do.

Nonexempt Employee Status and Overtime

Nonexempt Employee Status and OvertimeNonexempt Employee Status and OvertimeThe word hourly is often used interchangeably with nonexempt to describe an employee, but thats not entirely accurate. A nonexempt employee is one who is eligible to receive overtime pay, but not all hourly workers are nonexempt. Since 2004, a number of changes regarding which employees are eligible to receive overtime pay have been proposed, implemented, and rejected under three presidential administrations. The 2004 rules remain in place after changes made by President Barack Obamas administration in 2016 were thrown out by a federal court. President Donald Trump proposed new changes in 2019 that have not yet gone into effect. The 2004 Rule Nonexempt employees are not determined solely by their job title, according to the U.S. Department of Labors final rule, dated April 23, 2004. Instead, a combination of criteria, including their occupation (or industry), rate of pay, and job duties, are used. The 200 4 rule, which welches written by George W. Bushs Labor Department, exempted from the 1938 Fair Labor Standards Acts overtime eligibility requirements certain workers employed as executives, administrators, professionals of various sorts, and outside salespeople. It also exempted workers in some computer-related jobs. To be exempt, all of those categories of workers have to earn at least $455 a week, which amounts to an annual salary of $23,660. If they make less than that, theyre nonexempt, even if theyre considered to be salaried, rather than hourly, employees. The rule states that employers must comply with state or local laws, regulations, or ordinances that set a higher overtime rate or a shorter workweek for consideration of overtime pay. Employers may also choose to set a higher overtime rate or a shorter workweek, either on their own initiative or through a collective bargaining agreement with employees in a union. Executive Exemption For an executive to be considered exe mpt, their primary job must be managing a company or a department or subdivision of a company. They must oversee the work of at least two full-time employees or their equivalent (for example, four half-time employees) and be involved in a significant way in the hiring, firing, promotion, or demotion of these employees. Administrator Exemption For an administrative employee to be considered exempt, their primary job must be directly related to the management or general business operations of a company or its customers and they must exercise discretion and independent judgment regarding matters of significance to the company. Professional Employee Exemption There are two types of professional employee exemptions learned and creative. For a learned professional employee to be considered exempt, their primary job must require advanced knowledge in a field of science or learning that they obtained through specialized intellectual instruction. They must also be engaged in intellec tual work for which they must consistently exercise discretion and judgment. Examples of these jobs include lawyers, doctors, dentists, teachers, architects, clergy, registered nurses, accountants, engineers, actuaries, scientists, and pharmacists. For a creative professional employee to be considered exempt, their primary work must require invention, imagination, originality, or talent in an artistic or another creative field. Examples of these jobs include actors, musicians, composers, writers, and cartoonists. If an executive, administrative, or professional employee makes more than $100,000 in annual compensation, including at least $455 a week in salary or fees, they are considered to be exempt. Computer Employee Exemption For a computer-related worker to be exempt, their job must be in computer systems analysis, computer programming, software engineering, or a similar area. Outside Sales Employee Exemption For an outside sales employee to be exempt, their primary duty must be making sales and they must customarily work outside their employers place of business. Blue Collar and Public Safety Jobs The exemptions do not apply to non-management employees in production, maintenance, construction, and similar jobs (often called blue-collar jobs) or to law enforcement and correctional officers, firefighters, paramedics, and similar jobs involved in public safety, no matter how highly paid they are. Labor Criticism of Rule The rule welches criticized by labor groups for causing many lower-level managers without supervisory responsibility to lose overtime pay because of a change that affected team leaders and made them exempt as administrators. If an employee leads a team assigned to complete major projects for the employer (such as purchasing, selling, or closing all or part of the business negotiating a real estate transaction or a collective bargaining agreement or designing and implementing productivity improvements), they generally meet the d uties requirements for the administrative exemption, regardless of whether they are direct supervisors of the team members, the rule stated. Conversely, many executive assistants who had been classified as administrators became eligible for overtime pay if their duties werent considered to be of great enough significance to the company. The 2016 Rule On May 18, 2016, the Obama administration published a final rule that would have required employees to be paid overtime if their weekly salary was less than $913, an amount that works out to $47,476 annually. The salary threshold would be adjusted every three years starting on Jan. 1, 2020. Several states and business organizations filed lawsuits to prevent the changes from going into effect. They were consolidated into a single suit that was heard in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas. Judge Amos Mazzant granted a preliminary injunction to halt implementation of the new rules on Nov. 22, 2016. The Department o f Labor appealed the injunction. While the appeal was underway, Judge Mazzant granted the plaintiffs request for a summary judgment on Aug. 31, 2017, saying the department, which was then part of the Trump administration, had exceeded its authority by increasing the salary threshold by so much. On Sept. 7, 2017, the court approved the departments request to dismiss its appeal. Proposed 2019 Rules On March 7, 2019, the Department of Labor announced a proposed rule that would raise the salary threshold for overtime pay to $679 per week, or $35,308 a year. It would also increase the highly compensated salary level at which one automatically became an exempt employee to $147,414 a year. The Obama rule would have increased it to $134,000. On March 28, 2019, the department announced another proposed rule to clarify whether certain perks given to an employee must be included in the employees regular rate of pay that would, in turn, determine the usual overtime rate of time and a half. The department proposed that employers may exclude the following from an employees regular rate of pay the cost of providing wellness programs, onsite specialist treatment, gym access, and fitness classes, and employee discounts on retail goods and servicespayments for unused paid leavereimbursed expenses, even if not incurred entirely for the employers benefitdiscretionary bonusesbenefit plans, including accident, unemployment, and legal servicestuition programs, such as reimbursement programs or repayment of educational debt This second proposed rule also includes additional clarification about other forms of compensation, including payment for meal periods and callback pay, which is given when employees are asked to return to work outside normally scheduled hours.
